Trail Description

Jenks Lake Trail is a delightful family-friendly hike that leads to one of the San Bernardino National Forest's most charming woodland lakes. This easy 3.1-mile round-trip trail begins at 6,739 feet elevation along Highway 38, about 7 miles east of Angelus Oaks Lodge, and climbs a gentle 485 feet through beautiful mixed conifer forest. The well-maintained path is partially paved in sections and suitable for hikers of all ages and abilities, making it an ideal introduction to mountain hiking for families with children. The trail winds through towering Jeffrey pines and white firs, with the sound of birdsong accompanying you along the way. In spring and early summer, the forest floor comes alive with wildflowers, while autumn brings spectacular golden colors. The gentle, gradual climb allows you to enjoy the journey without exhausting yourself, and frequent benches along the way provide welcome rest stops with forest views. Jenks Lake itself is a picturesque 20-acre mountain lake nestled in the forest at 7,000 feet elevation, offering a perfect destination for a picnic lunch. The shoreline provides numerous spots to sit and enjoy the peaceful mountain scenery, watch for wildlife, or simply relax in nature. Kids love exploring the lake area and spotting chipmunks, squirrels, and various bird species. The day-use area charges $5 for parking (Adventure Pass accepted), and facilities include picnic tables, restrooms, and trash receptacles. The trailhead parking lot is popular and can fill quickly on summer weekends - arriving early (before 9am) ensures you'll find a spot. Dogs are welcome on leash, and owners must clean up after their pets. The relatively short distance and manageable elevation gain make this an excellent choice for visitors adjusting to the mountain altitude before attempting more challenging Big Bear trails. Jenks Lake Trail offers a perfect blend of accessibility and natural beauty.
