Swim beaches vs. lake access in Big Bear
Only one spot on the lake is a staffed, designated swim beach: Swim Beach (McDill) at Meadow Park, which has the lifeguards, the shallow entry, and the family amenities — and the admission fee. The rest of the beaches below are free, unguarded lake access, and several of them are the better pick for picnics, dogs, paddling, or quiet views. Choose by what you actually want to do: supervised swimming points to Swim Beach, everything else points to the free shoreline spots.
Why Big Bear Lake Beaches Are Different
Big Bear Lake sits at 6,750+ feet elevation in the San Bernardino Mountains, creating a unique beach experience unlike Southern California's ocean beaches. The freshwater lake offers calm, clear waters without waves, tides, or saltwater - perfect for families with young children and beginning swimmers.
Water temperatures range from refreshingly cool (65-70°F) in peak summer to cold (55-60°F) in early/late season. The high altitude means stronger UV rays, so sunscreen is essential. Most beaches offer stunning mountain backdrop views that ocean beaches simply can't match.
Important: Only Swim Beach (McDill) has lifeguard supervision, and it is the only beach here that charges admission. All other beaches are free and swim-at-your-own-risk. Big Bear Municipal Water District regulations require swimmers to stay within 50 feet of shore or 20 feet from a private dock.

Can you swim in Big Bear Lake in October?
You can — the lake has no closed season and the free beaches stay open — but Swim Beach closes for the season after August 30, so there are no lifeguards anywhere on the lake, and surface temperatures have usually dropped to around 55–60°F. Plan on a quick dip rather than an afternoon in the water, and expect the shoulder-season shoreline to be quiet.
Are dogs allowed at Big Bear Lake beaches?
At 6 of the 8, on-leash: Boulder Bay Park, Ski Beach Park, East and West Boat Ramp Beaches, Big Bear Dam Beach, and Holloway's Marina & Beach. Ski Beach Park also backs onto an off-leash dog park (Bark Park). Dogs are not allowed at Swim Beach (McDill).
