Christmas & the Holidays in Big Bear
A snowy mountain Christmas two hours from LA โ twinkling Village lights, a real chance of snow, and cozy cabins. It's magical, and it's the busiest week of the year. Here's how to have the magic without the stress.
Winter conditions change fast. This guide was verified for the 2026โ27 season in 2026 โ always check live snow, road, and chain conditions (Caltrans QuickMap) the morning you travel.
๐ The holiday vibe
Christmas is peak Big Bear. The Village strings up lights and leans into the holiday feel, the resorts are typically open, and if the storms cooperate you get a genuine white Christmas. Families come up for a few days of skiing, sledding, and slow cabin evenings โ it's one of the most festive small-mountain-town holiday scenes in Southern California.
What to do over the holidays
- Ski or ride: Snow Summit and Bear Mountain run over the holidays (snowmaking backs up thin years). Skiing guide โ
- Sled & snow play: tube parks and free sledding hills when there's snow. Snow play & sledding โ
- Stroll the Village: holiday lights, shops, and cozy restaurants โ the go-to for a festive evening.
- Cabin time: a fireplace, hot cocoa, and a snowy view is half the reason to come. Where to stay โ
โ ๏ธ Plan around the crowds (this is the big one)
Christmas through New Year's is the busiest and most expensive stretch of the entire year. Lodging books out weeks ahead, roads up the mountain back up on peak days, and ski lots fill early. A little planning is the difference between a dream trip and a traffic-jam headache.
- Book lodging early โ the best cabins go months in advance for the holidays.
- Drive up early or off-peak โ mid-morning holiday traffic on the mountain roads is brutal.
- Arrive at the slopes before ~8 AM โ upper lots fill fast; reserve ski parking if you can.
- Carry chains โ a holiday storm can put roads under chain control within the hour. Chain guide โ
Will there be snow for Christmas?
Maybe โ December snow is real but not guaranteed year to year. Even in a slow snow year the resorts and tube parks make snow, so you can usually ski and sled regardless. For the bigger picture on timing, see when it snows in Big Bear and the December guide.
