Big Bear Skiing for Beginners

Your first day on snow, made simple.

โ„๏ธ

Winter conditions change fast. This guide was verified for the 2026โ€“27 season in 2026 โ€” always check live snow, road, and chain conditions (Caltrans QuickMap) the morning you travel.

Big Bear is one of the best places in Southern California to learn to ski or snowboard โ€” it's close to LA, the terrain is forgiving in the right spots, and there's a dedicated beginner area to keep you away from fast traffic while you find your feet. Here's how to make your first day a good one.

Start at Snow Summit

For a first day, choose Snow Summit over Bear Mountain. Summit has a separated beginner zone and long, gentle groomed runs that let you build confidence. Bear Mountain actually has plenty of beginner terrain too, but its park-heavy, freestyle vibe can feel intimidating on a first day โ€” so start at Summit and explore Bear later once you're comfortable linking turns.

Take a lesson (really)

A single group lesson will save you a day of flailing. Instructors get you sliding, stopping, and turning safely, and beginner packages that bundle a lesson with rental gear and a limited lift ticket are usually the best value for a first-timer. Book ahead on weekends โ€” lessons fill.
