Free Sledding Spots in Big Bear

You don't need a tube-park ticket to play in the snow. Grab a sled, find a free hill, and go โ€” here's where, plus the one parking rule that decides where you can actually pull over.

Winter conditions change fast. This guide was verified for the 2026โ€“27 season in 2026 โ€” always check live snow, road, and chain conditions (Caltrans QuickMap) the morning you travel.

Big Bear's best free sledding is on the quieter north shore around Fawnskin, where National Forest picnic areas and a few city parks double as snow-play hills. There's no lift and nothing is groomed or supervised, so you'll hike back up each run โ€” but it's free (aside from parking), uncrowded compared to the tube parks, and the classic way locals do a snow day.

The best free spots

Woodland Trail Picnic Area

North shore near Fawnskin. Gentle open slopes that are great for younger kids. Park in the picnic-area lot.

Grout Bay Picnic Area

Fawnskin. Space to spread out, but note the timing: the Forest Service closes Grout Bay and the adjacent Grays Peak Trail for bald-eagle nesting, typically Nov 1โ€“Apr 1 โ€” which covers most of snow season. Check the current San Bernardino National Forest closure order before you go.

Boulder Bay Park

West end of the lake with a free park lot. Small hills and lake views; easy in-and-out for a quick sled session. Park details โ†’

Rotary Park

In Big Bear Lake with a free lot โ€” a convenient in-town option when the north-shore lots are jammed.

๐Ÿšซ The one rule that decides where you can go

Don't pull over on the roadside to play in the snow โ€” it's a safety hazard, and San Bernardino County has banned roadside stopping outright on the worst-hit streets (Novโ€“May), so you can be ticketed or towed. Park only in designated lots: a National Forest picnic/snow-play area or a city park. Several north-shore spots sit on National Forest land and need an Adventure Pass to park; the city-park lots are free. See the snow-play hub for the current parking breakdown.

Want a groomed lane and a lift instead?

If hiking back up isn't your idea of fun, Big Bear's tube parks sell timed sessions with groomed lanes and a tow lift โ€” no climbing required. And if you've got little kids, see snow play with kids for the gentlest options.
