Big Bear Snow Play With Kids

A snow day with little kids is magic โ€” if you pick the right spot and pack smart. Here's how to do a Big Bear snow day with toddlers and young children without the tears.

Winter conditions change fast. This guide was verified for the 2026โ€“27 season in 2026 โ€” always check live snow, road, and chain conditions (Caltrans QuickMap) the morning you travel.

Gentle free hills for little ones

For toddlers and young kids, you want short, gentle slopes that run out flat โ€” not a steep hill by a road. The best free options are the north-shore picnic areas: Woodland Trail Picnic Area has mellow open slopes that are forgiving for first sleds. (Nearby Grout Bay is another gentle spot, but it's usually closed Novโ€“Apr for bald-eagle nesting, so check before you count on it.) Boulder Bay Park is another easy in-and-out spot with a free lot. See them all on the free sledding guide.

Or go to a tube park (no hiking back up)

With young kids, the hike back up a free hill gets old fast. A tube park solves that โ€” groomed lanes and a tow lift mean the kids ride down and get pulled back up, over and over. Check the height and age minimums before you go; some parks have a minimum height for solo tubers and family-friendly zones for the smallest kids.
